Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara was the last first-round pick to sign a contract and now it appears he'll be the first to miss the start of the season with an injury.
CBSSports.com's Rapid Reporter Alex Raskin writes that Amukamara left practice with a serious foot injury Saturday and will need surgery, the team announced. Amukamara, who was only in his second practice following a holdout, broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot. It is not known how long he'll be out.
According to the Newark Star-Ledger's Zach Berman, "There was nothing apparent about the play when the injury occurred. He walked out of the training complex on his own power with a member of the Giants' medical staff."
Last year, another Giant, offensive lineman William Beatty, suffered a similar injury in the season opener. He missed two months and returned to play the final seven games.
During April's NFL Draft, the Giants were surprised to find Amukamara still available with the 19th overall pick. Now it appears that New York will have to wait a little while longer before their 2011 first-rounder takes the field to help bolster the secondary.
