New Caravaggio Painting Discovered
A previously unknown painting from Baroque master Caravaggio may have been discovered but some art Frida Kahlo paintings historians are questioning the homoerotic piece's authenticity. The Vatican's official newspaper Conservatoire Romano reported on Saturday that the painting was discovered in the collection of the Jesuits in Rome. Tentatively titled The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence, the image depicts a mostly-naked young Fabian Perez paintings with one arm outstretched as he leans over leaping flames beneath him. The discovery of the painting conveniently coincides with the 400th anniversary of the painter's death - so conveniently that many art historians are raising their eyebrows at the authenticity of the piece. With his keen eye for male beauty - and propensity toward depicting pretty young boys Pablo Picasso paintings - many art historians and queer theorists like to count Caravaggio amongst the canon of historical gays. In Caravaggio's Secrets, however, authors Leo Berman and Ulysses Detroit assert that the impressions of sexual enticement and withholding conveyed by the painter's work has more to do with transcendent connectedness and community than queerness.
